ATTENDANCE

School education lays the vital foundations of a child’s life. Research clearly demonstrates the link between regular attendance and educational progress and attainment. As a school, we will encourage parents and carers to ensure that their child achieves maximum possible attendance and that any problems that prevent this are identified and acted on promptly. As parents, it is their responsibility to ensure that their children arrive at school and return home safely.

Our target for this academic year’s attendance is 97%

The government considers any child with an attendance rate below 90% as being a persistent absentee.

In conjunction with LA Attendance Welfare Officers we monitor the attendance of all pupils in school on a regular basis and will inform parents and carers via letter if their child’s attendance becomes a cause for concern. At John Emmerson Batty, any parent or carer of a pupil with attendance below 93% will be contacted to inform them of their child’s attendance record.

Absence may be for a very valid reason (e.g. specific illness) and we appreciate that sometimes circumstances are such that absence is beyond the control of the parent or carer. However we are duty bound to contact parents to make them aware of the position regarding their child’s level of absence. Parents/Carers don’t generally work out the percentage figure for their children, as they are quite rightly very busy people. We do often find that, where attendance becomes a cause for concern for a particular child,  parents are often not aware that their child’s absence was adding up to something significant. We hope parents and carers understand our desire to keep parents and carers as informed as possible.

On rare occasions absence is such that involvement of our Galileo Multi Academy Trust Welfare Officers is required to arrange meetings with parents and carers to set targets for future attendance. During these meetings we will discuss issues that individual families may be having regarding their child’s attendance, with a view to, as far as possible, providing supporting and overcoming barriers.

By working together we aim to ensure that children attend school regularly and get the best life chances possible. If you would like to discuss any aspect of your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Evidence shows that the students with the highest attendance throughout their time in school gain the best GCSE and A Level results. Our research found that pupils who performed better both at the end of primary and secondary school missed fewer days than those who didn’t perform as well. (Education Hub 23)
